Rev. Harry Schenkel grew up on the south shore of Long Island and graduated from Long Island Lutheran High School in 1987. While at LuHi, Pastor Schenkel first felt God’s call towards the Holy Ministry. Upon graduation, Pastor Schenkel attended Concordia College, Bronxville, NY (’91) and then Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana (’95). His internship and first call to the Ministry of the Lutheran Church was on the north fork of Long Island at Our Redeemer, Aquebogue. In late 1996, Pastor Schenkel was called to St John’s, Sayville, NY where he served as pastor and director of the PreSchool for nearly 12 years. In 2009, Pastor Schenkel began making the transition from the LC-MS to the ELCA. He served for three years at Our Saviour, Jamaica, NY. In January 2012, he served as the term-call pastor at Transfiguration in Harlem, NY.
After six months serving at Transfiguration, Pastor Schenkel was once again led in a different direction. With God’s grace and in a turn of events that only our Creator could work, on St. Patrick’s Day 2013, Pastor Schenkel was called to be the pastor of St Paul’s, East Northport, NY where the ministry of Long Island Lutheran Day School (LuDay) takes place. His life and ministry have come full circle as Pastor Schenkel now has the privilege of serving the LuHi family which played such an important role in leading his life to where he is today. Pastor Schenkel sits on the Executive Committee of the Synod Council of the Metro New York Synod of the ELCA. He also serves on the Board of Long Island Lutheran Day School. In his free time, Harry enjoys spending time with his family, reading, camping, traveling, exercising, and golf (a game in which he needs much help…). He is married to Lisa, who is the Art Teacher at LuDay. Lisa also manages a group home for the mentally disabled through AHRC Suffolk where the Schenkel’s reside in Oakdale, NY. Together, Pastor and Lisa have four children – Harrison and Samantha who both reside in NYC, as well as Mackenzie and Hunter in their senior year of high school.
